The Pan-African AU Agenda 2063 Diplomatic Mission has commissioned a community water project in Garam, Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as part of activities marking Africa Day 2026 in Abuja.
The intervention formed part of the Mission’s policy drive on sustainable water access and sanitation under the African Union Agenda 2063 framework.
Global President of the Mission, Amb. Dr. Stephen Gbatigbi Ben-Joel, said the project was designed to improve access to clean water and support healthier living conditions in underserved communities.
Ben-Joel stated that access to potable water remains a major development challenge across Africa, stressing that water security is directly linked to public health, food production and economic growth.
He said the 2026 Africa Day theme, “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation System to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063,” highlights the urgent need for stronger investment in water and sanitation systems.
According to him, the Garam intervention demonstrates the Mission’s commitment to practical community-based projects capable of improving the welfare of residents.
He urged members of the community to safeguard the facility and ensure proper maintenance to guarantee sustainable use for future generations.
A community leader, Baba Sallah, said residents previously struggled to access clean water, especially for domestic use and agricultural activities within the area.
Sallah noted that women and children were among the worst affected, adding that the project has significantly reduced the stress of travelling long distances in search of water.
Activities marking the Africa Day celebration also included a Liberation Walk and the unveiling of the African Digital Trade Centre under the Pan African Continental Super Marketplace to promote African trade and economic integration.
