The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct has recommended a six-month suspension for Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan over alleged violations of Senate rules.
Presenting the committee’s findings on Thursday, its chairman, Senator Neda Imasuen, stated that the suspension should take effect from March 6, 2025.
As part of the recommendation, Senator Natasha’s office will be locked, and she will be barred from entering the National Assembly premises during the suspension period. Additionally, her salaries and those of her legislative aides will be withheld. The committee also proposed that she should not be allowed to represent Nigeria in any official capacity as a senator while serving the suspension.
The committee, however, stated that the lawmaker could submit a written apology, which the Senate may consider in reviewing her suspension.
The Senate is expected to vote on the recommendation. If approved, the Kogi Central lawmaker will lose all legislative privileges for six months.
Ongoing Dispute with Senate President
Senator Natasha has been embroiled in a dispute with Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The disagreement initially stemmed from a seating arrangement issue in the Senate but later escalated after she accused Akpabio of sexual harassment.
However, on Wednesday, the same committee dismissed her petition, which alleged abuse of office, sexual harassment, and obstruction of legislative duties.
Senator Imasuen, who represents Edo South, described the petition as “dead on arrival”, stating that it would not be entertained by the Red Chamber. The petition was signed by her constituents.
The Senate’s decision on the recommended suspension is expected in the coming days.
