The High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Nigeria, Masudur Rahman, has said that trade between Nigeria and Bangladesh has surpassed $100 million, reflecting the strengthening economic and diplomatic ties between both nations.
Speaking during Bangladesh’s 54th Independence and National Day on Wednesday in Abuja, Rahman highlighted the remarkable growth in bilateral trade and expanding cooperation in key sectors.
He revealed that both nations are exploring new areas of collaboration, including the blue economy and riverine development, to boost economic diversification.
Rahman said that both countries youthful populations offer vast economic potential.
He said, “Ever since I came, Our trade has expanded from just $50 million to over $100 million. Entrepreneurs from both countries are actively engaging in business, particularly in ICT, agriculture, knitwear, defense, and diplomatic training.
“With 69% of our populations under the age of 49, we must work together to harness this demographic advantage, bridge the digital divide, and drive sustainable development.”
Representing Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, the Chief of Protocol, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wahab Akande, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening ties with Bangladesh.
He commended Bangladesh’s contributions to global diplomacy, noting that both nations collaborate closely in international forums such as the United Nations, D-8, and the Commonwealth.
“Since 1976, when diplomatic ties were first established, relations between Nigeria and Bangladesh have remained cordial. Though our mission is currently covered from New Delhi, we look forward to reopening our own soon,” Akande said.
